The Story Behind My Topic. . .

Could you imagine waking up every morning wondering will today be your last? In 2004, my grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Finding out that she was diagnosed with cancer, just like any other person her main questions were “What will happen to my family, and what should we do next?”  The doctors explained to her the procedure and scheduled a surgery to remove the cancer. Now, seven years later, my grandmother is a breast cancer survivor. "About one in every eight U.S. women will develop breast cancer over the course of their lifetime."(BreastCancer.org) "About 39,520 women in the U.S. were expected to die in 2011 from breast cancer." (BreastCancer.org) Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer among women. Many do not consider that emotional and psychological effects that cancer can create for a person. Like, my grandmother, many women who are afflicted by it, their daily routines are changed because they become self-conscious due to the fact that they may only have one breast or none at all. Although, my grandmother did not have to change her life drastically, she was still aware of her condition. Breast cancer sneaks up on a person like a thief in the night, waiting to steal and take over the immune system. All women should stay aware and give themselves monthly breast exams!
